Surly Girl Saloon's motto is "Eat. Drink. Rock. Raise Hell." For punk rock apartment-ites, this place is a dream come true. It's a surreal mix of Wild West saloon with dingy basement dive-bar sensibilities (but without the actual dinginess) - heavy wood oak fixtures, saloon doors with Western carvings and chandeliers - but also neon lights, pirate décor and good, strong booze.

The uniqueness doesn't stop there, though - the

menu offerings range from to Cherry Coke-glazed ribs to Frito Pie. Vegetarian apartment-ites will have good reason to keep coming back here, for sampling the spinach and artichoke dip to the meatless sausage pizza (one among many options featuring meat-substitutes). In terms of alcohol - of course there's sasparilla and a fully-stocked bar, but they boast an impressive variety of beers, ranging from Abita Purple Haze (a lager with raspberry puree) to some heavy, malty nut brown stouts.

The staff are attentive and friendly, and dress in keeping with the theme of the place. Aside from being a pretty popular bar (it's open until 2am most nights), they also host regular events, including "Punk Rock Aerobics", art exhibits and live music. The detail in the décor is pretty astounding, but it's nice to see the creativity extends to the food and drinks, too.
